fabulous finds!

Posted on

You’ll never believe it…. but I went to an auction last night!  I try to go to this particular auction each week mainly because it’s super close to my house, they serve beer, and usually there are a few good buys!  Last night there were more than a few good buys that I’d like to share with you!  I got all but two items that was on my wish list!  Check it out!

prisoner sign

So really, where else can you find one of these!  It’s so cool!  Especially since we are in St. Louis!  It’s in great shape and very heavy!  I’m not really sure what type of decor this is, but Mike, from American Pickers, always says something like If you have never seen it before then it’s a good pick.  I’ve never seen a sign like this so I figured I must get it!  Maybe it’d look cool behind a bar or something!  Wherever it goes it will be a conversation piece!

Victorian shabby chic frame

I also picked up this cute little Victorian frame.  I almost painted it, but it’s in such great shape I decided to leave it!  I think this was a good decision, if you’d like to weigh in I’d appreciate it!

Colanders

I was also able to get these cool colanders for a steal!  I put them in the booth, but if they don’t' sell right away I was thinking of making a couple of pendant lights out of them!  Just have to learn how to do that first!  I believe, well I hope, that there will be some sort of kit that I can use to complete this.  I just think they’d be really cool above a kitchen island or sink!

primitive stool

This is seriously the cutest thing!

primitive stool

It’s just a small simple stool, but what I think makes it really cool is that someone carved in a heart with initials inside it.  I just think it’s so cute!  I wonder who did this and what their story was.

That’s the cool thing about finding antiques, you always wonder what the people who owned them were like, who they were, and why they no longer need the things we all get in bidding wars over.
Sometimes it’s kind of sad to see things that nobody wants.  Like this stool, was it a childish love that no longer exists or did the two whose initials are on this stool live a happy life together?  It’s hard to say, but definitely interesting to think about.  I’m sure I could write an entire book on the stories of those who owned my new treasures, who knows… maybe I will someday!
“kings” scale

I am calling this the “kings” scale.  To me it looks like something I’d see on a tour of Graceland.  I mean who has a gold scale?  It’s another one of those things I have never seen before, so I figured I had to have it!  It’s very Art Deco looking and will add a funky touch!

Mo Pac map

This is the second map I’ve bought in the past couple of weeks.  I really like it, it has all the railroad lines on it!  which, of course, my 5-year-old loves!  This one may have to have a permanent spot in his room!

desk lamp

Oh this is one of my favorite finds of the week!  Only second to the prisoner sign!  This desk lamp is super cool!  It works great too!  I actually came across one just like it at an antique mall a few years ago but it was broken.  This is in great shape and would look way cool in an industrial inspired space!

hat and hat box

This hat box that I was able to get, with the hat, is in great shape!  Most of these I have seen have not been in such great shape!  One of my fellow bidders explained that I got a great deal, since these boxes are made out of paper they are usually torn or really worn.  Whoever owned this hat and box must have known to take care of it!

That brings an interesting thought to mind, what kinds of things do we have, in todays time will people want to collect 20 years or more down the road?  If I knew what would pe popular then I’d be sure to take great care of whatever I have!  There are so many things as children or even adults that we just toss out, don’t take care of, or whatever.  I just wonder what will be collectible when I am older, and will I want to kick myself and say, “man I had one of those and I sold it in a yard sale,” or something!  Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
enamel bowls

These bowls are really cool!  the smaller of the two would be SO cute as a little planter!  Even the blue one would make a nice planter.  It is super heavy though as it is iron and enamel!

I just love that all the pieces I was able to pick up this week have the same kind of look to them!  It definitely makes our booth look nice!  I love anything vintage, and repurposing these old items that would have otherwise been disregarded!
Currently we are looking to move, and now that I am into all of these auctions I can’t wait to get a new house and decorate all over again!  I have some stellar ideas and some awesome pieces to work with.
